About Micky’s Fish Farm

I am Gurjatinder Singh Virk from village Kandola, Roopnagar district. After passing my matriculation, I chose farming instead of running behind a job. I started assisting my father in farming. We had a piece of 5 acres land that had been lying vacant for the last 100 years. Because the land remained waterlogged for 11 months in a year, so no one ever tried of doing anything on that land in the past.
I started fish farming on that 5 acres of waterlogged land in the year of 1985because of compulsion, and today I have extended the fish farming area into 30 acres of land. I farm breeds of common carp fishes like Catla and Rohu. I put two breeds of fishes in one pond and maintain an ideal condition for the good yield.  The price at which I sold the fish in the market is Rs 80/Kg which is less as compared to the market price (Rs 120/kg). I’m managing my whole fish farming business with the help of one servant only.
From the beginning, I was very much concerned about preserving the nature, so I’m using solar pump sets to irrigate my own kitchen garden which reduces the carbon footprint in the atmosphere. To improve the fish farming methods in India, I also visited China with Ex-Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, to know more about the technology being used there for fish farming.
My house is in the center of the ponds on a piece of land, and on that piece of land where my house is, I have made my own farm where I have grown different types of fruits, vegetables, and pulses. Farm area is developed very well due to which many different species of birds like fish-hawk, kingfisher, fork tail, geese, parrot, peacocks, etc., can be easily found. My wife Rupinder Kaur Virk also assists me in fish farming business, she manages all the account work. In future, I’m planning to develop my farm area to make it as a tourist place.

SUCCESS STORY & MESSAGE

OUR SUCCESS STORY

I started fish farming almost 30 years ago, and since then, it was my hard work and diligence, which helped me in spreading that 5 acres fish farming land to 30 acres. Before starting the fish farming, I especially visited Gurdaspur and took 5 days of training.
After seeing my fish farming business and increased profit, many other farmers also started with the fish farming and today about 300-400 acres of waste land is being used for the purpose of fish farming in the same area by the other farmers. Now, a community of passionate fishing farmers has been created in that area and their endeavors are ultimately resulting in the economic development of the area which is adding to the economic growth of the state and the nation.

MESSAGE TO FARMERS

Farmers should start adopting new technologies for better production. Fish farming is a very profitable business for the farmers if they know the right technique and method of doing it. And from hard work you can reap anything from a piece of land, the only difference will be in the shape and appearance of the fruit and vegetable. So, stop doubting yourself, work hard and make it happen.
